This information is provided to answer most of the questions you may have about the VA flight training program, as well as the requirements and responsibilities that are required of the applicant enrolled.
Who can receive VA benefits?
VA benefits are available to qualified veterans, active duty and part time military personnel.
Your first step prior to enrollment:
Your first step is to find out if you have any VA benefits available to you. This can be found out by calling your local VA office to assure that you are entitled to benefits. VA personnel can tell you under what chapter you qualify and the amount you qualify for. If you are unsure of which VA office to contact, we may be able to help. Give us a call here at Maine Instrument Flight (MIF).
Enrollment procedure:
To enroll you must fill out an application form (22-1990) which you can pick up here at the school, or if you wish we can mail it to you. Along with an application, an enrollment form (22-1999) will be completed by MIF. These forms will be sent to the VA for final approval of benefits prior to the start of any flight training. The VA will send an award letter stating that your application and enrollment have been approved. This process can take from three to six weeks. Upon receiving this award letter, your flight training can begin.
The VA will not allow an applicant to be enrolled in more than one course at a time. Prior to enrolling in another course the applicant must either complete and graduate from the course or the school, (MIF) must officially notify the VA by letter of the course change.
VA applicant requirements and responsibilities:
A Private Pilot Certificate is required prior to receiving any VA flight training benefits.
Prior to your flight training you must hold a first or second class FAA medical certificate from an approved FAA medical examiner. A third class medical certificate does not qualify! Your FAA medical certificate must remain current through the entire flight training program. You can get the numbers and locations of FAA medical examiners by giving us a call here at MIF.
Once enrolled in the course the VA/SAA (State Approving Agency) will require that you fly a minimum of 12 hours every 90 days in order to maintain your status in the VA flight training program.
Prior to your flight training MIF will require copies of your pilot certificate(s) and medical (first or second class).
How much of the flight training will your VA benefits cover?
Approved applicants will receive 60% on all their flight training; this includes dual flight, solo flight, preflight briefing and ground training contained within each VA approved flight training course.
The student applicant is responsible for payment of the remaining 40% which should be paid at the completion of each lesson. Other payment methods can be arranged, such as student accounts and advanced payment programs.
What your VA benefits will not cover:
Your VA benefits will not cover items such as your computer/written exam, the practical test (flight test), study material and supplies such as books, manuals, plotters, charts, etc., or any other services that may be required by the applicant during his/her training.
